Global Warming
Global warming is an up to date edition to the menace of environmental pollution. It threatens the very survival of the planet just as the possibility of a nuclear holocaust did in the Cold War years. The earth has started becoming warmer day by day. Of late a record loss of sea-ice in the Arctic causes much concern to the scientists. They fear that the Arctic has now entered an irreversible phase of warming which will accelerate the loss of the polar sea-ice that has helped to keep the climate stable for thousands of years. The massive land glaciers of Greenland are also melting. As a consequence the sea levels will rise alarmingly. Rainfall becomes irregular globally. Many factors are contributing for heating. Deforestation and use of fossil fuel, chemical fertilisers and pesticides are the main factors. Environmentalists like Greenpeace activists are holding international meet with world leaders. Urbanisation and industrialisation are to be restricted if the planet is to be survived. Alternative energy resources must be utilised. Biological fertilisers should be used. The greenhouse effect can be checked if advancement is restrained. A warmer globe is not accommodative to the warmth of life.
